Cow egg + human sperm (DNA) = chimera

The world is getting weirder and weirder each day. I must pause to thank God that I have a faith to fall back on when things get out of hand. I will use my Lord as my shield and my guide. Otherwise, one can get carried into a selfish world where humans try to evade sickness, death, sufferings, pain and all that with no expenses spared.

Ok, first of all, I made up the above equation. They say human DNA, not human sperm.

UK scientists have applied for permission to create embryos by fusing human DNA with cow eggs.
The hybrid human-bovine embryos would be used for stem cell research and would not be allowed to develop for more than a few days.

But critics say it is unethical and potentially dangerous.

Stem cell research is one of the most promising areas of medical science.

They are the body’s master cells and five-day-old embryos are packed with them – each with the potential to turn into any tissue in the body.

It is this ability which scientists want to harness to treat diseases such as Parkinson’s Disease, strokes and Alzheimer’s Disease.

To do that, they need to have access to thousands of embryos for research.

Short supply

The problem is that human eggs for research are in short supply and to obtain them women have to undergo surgery.

That is why scientists want to use cows’ eggs as a substitute.

They would insert human DNA into a cow’s egg which has had its genetic material removed and then create an embryo by the same technique that produced Dolly the Sheep.

The resulting embryo would be 99.9% human, the only bovine element would be DNA outside the nucleus of the cell.

It would though, technically be a chimera, part-human, part-animal.

The aim would be to extract stem cells from the embryo when it is six days old, before destroying it. (BBC)

Note the large print? That is a human we are destroying. That is why Catholics are very much against stem cells research. It is morally wrong to use part of someone’s child, kill the child and cure our disease.
Then again, if I am put into a situation between life and death, will I succumb to science for a cure or will I stand by my faith and remain steadfast? I believe if we turn to God, we will not be put at the crossroads. Christ will lead us.

Yayaya, I know many will not agree with my views but hey, who cares. This is what karma is all about. As long as we continue meddling into things, then, more and more weird, incurable diseases will appear. It is a never ending plus/minus. You gain some, you lose a lot.

  1. chinese culture oredi has chimeras from long time ago! see the creatures in hell? the horse heads & cow heads with human bodies? & the monkey god story with the hamsup pig? hahahahaha..nothing new!

  2. Hmmmm, 1st step to create X-man from the lab.

BTW, medical is about survivability under evolutions. With so many pollution, human has disrupt the normal evolution process, perhaps this is a new path 😉

  3. I think people are courting trouble by altering all these DNAs and stuffs. Yes, maybe some diseases could be cured, but at what price? Who are they saving when they swap a life for a life?

Just think, what they are doing is trying to justify taking life to save life. If you have the money, your life could be prolonged. FOr those who are for all these DNA altering and stem cell research, just think, if it’s OK to take life to save life, what’s stopping someone from taking your life just because they can afford it?

  4. I don’t think it’s a life for a life. It’s a life for many lives. I don’t think a chimera can actually grow up to be part human/part animal and survive.

Don’t spurn science. Remember, you may pray and yet not receive what you want or need. God isn’t a vending machine to grant all your prayers. At some point or another, you will have to rely on science.

We could go into a huge long story about how people are dying and the only thing that can save them is science because god doesn’t always answer prayers.

Or does god anwer prayers by using science? How would we know whether some where out there, somebody has prayed for her child to be saved and the only way is by stem cell research and usage? And if the child is saved, hasn’t god answered her prayer? I think god answers via science much more than people give credit for.

  5. Oh, just like to add.. to be saved? Nobody is saved. (I’m not talking about in Christ) Nobody lives forever.

Science can prolong your life. It will NOt save you from the inevitable fate of death.

That comes to the final question…. how old is enough for one to ‘die’ gracefully?

  6. helen – Exactly, if we have the way, we would like to be immortals, no?

tres – I am not suggesting impeding science because it is ‘evil’. I am saying that there are limits to doing things. A human is a human life. Saving thousands does not justify killing that life. And no, God is not our servant to fulfil our every wishes. He gives his faithfuls strength, not necessary always answering prayers but provide the comfort to the believers.

    helen – Gimme a give!

moo_t – There is a better option. One big meteor and wipe us all out. THE END.

wuching – Ya hor, maybe they had been meddling with b3astilty?

For he that will save his life, shall lose it: and he that shall lose his life for my sake shall find it
