BTW, great minds think alike! I have the same Seagate HDD too. I dumped the Seagate software and treated my external HDD like a giant thumbdrive. Unfortunately, I formatted it to NTFS. Hopefully, my Linux machine can read the HDD too.

i recently bought 1TB ext hard drive. format and partition the whole drive wt my Mac into 2 partitions. One for Win (FAT) and one for Mac (HFS Journaled). I then reconnect the hard drive to PC and reformat just the partition it recognises to NTFS. 
easy.
